Aloha, I’m Dr. Celeste Pinkham, a Doctor of Optometry and Integrative Nutrition Health Coach.
I help women with periods balance their hormones without birth control pills. Acne, night sweats, belly fat appearing out of nowhere, fluctuating weight, period problems? Frustrated and confused with what to try next? Me too, or at least that used to be me.
How did I get here professionally?
I am a Doctor of Optometry and I did my doctorate thesis on Migraine Headaches. I have been practicing Optometry for the past 20 years. Over the years, I’ve seen thousands of patients battling various health concerns from Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, as well as other issues like weight, stress and lack of energy. Most people don’t see the correlation between these diseases and eye care. Medications affect vision and eye health. Diseases can show early signs in the eyes before an official diagnosis from their general physician. Rather than wait for diseases to develop, I prefer to take the preventative approach.
I received my training from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition*, where I studied a variety of dietary theories and practical lifestyle coaching methods. With my knowledge, we co-create completely personalized actions based on your goals to move you toward your ideal vision of health within your unique body, lifestyle, preferences, and resources.
My personal journey started with a scary High Cholesterol alert. I was too young to have High Cholesterol. I didn’t want to have a stroke like my father. I needed to fight this. I changed my eating habits. I looked at the things in my life that were toxic and slowly removed them. This started with processed and packaged foods. I shifted to buying Organic fruits and vegetables. The next step was reviewing the personal products I used, my makeup, lotions, soaps and shampoos. I even had all my metal fillings in my teeth replaced with composite fillings to avoid or at least minimize my mercury exposure. I changed the cleaning products I used in my home and at work. It was not only better for me but my family, pets, employees, and the environment.
This naturally led to me diving in deeper and evaluating all aspects of my life. After taking ‘the pill’ for 20 years, I decided I wanted to get back to my real self not the one influenced by synthetic hormones. I learned that when a woman takes synthetic hormones she misses out on the natural benefits her body and mind could experience during the four phases of her menstrual cycle. For example, during the ovulatory phase, the hormones present allow her to be more communicative and collaborative. During the luteal phase, she is highly focused on details. During the follicular phase her strengths are in initiating and planning. In the menstrual phase, which a lot of women dread, is actually a great time for reflection and research. I was missing out on all these amazing things for most of my adult life and I wanted to experience them. Better late than never.
Through all the research I had done about “the pill”, hormones, and women’s health, I knew it would take some time for my body to regulate itself. I also learned that taking “the pill” can raise cholesterol levels, which explains why I had High Cholesterol at such a young age. In my journey of getting back to the “real” me, my first step was to detoxify my body of the synthetic hormones. Doing a liver cleanse and supplementing with vitamins the pill depleted my body of was a start. I was and still am consistent with eating liver-loving and hormone-balancing foods. After only 3 1/2 months, my period returned. I was thrilled! Everything I had been doing paid off. But it’s not over. There is no destination of “Good Health”. It is a journey. I continue to eat the foods and move my body in ways that are correct for me and it’s working.
In Hawaii, Shaka is a gesture of many meanings. Here, I use it to say Goodbye to my old ways and Hello to my new way of eating, moving and being. I’m getting back to my real self.
